Being a woman is hard work! We try to do it all, and as a result, we get stressed out and overwhelmed and begin doubting ourselves. We start playing the comparison game which causes us to work even harder! If we could just take a moment to BREATHE and realize the madness isn't necessary, we would see that most ALL women are facing the same struggles and insecurities. This was me not too long ago until I finally decided to make some changes in how I do certain things. I consider these life-changing tips every woman should work on that will significantly reduce the stress and overwhelm that life brings! I've also included three life-changing books that helped me put things into perspective.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test what God's will is: His good, pleasing and perfect will.

3 Life-Changing Books for Stressed and Overwhelmed Mom
Before I get to the life-changing books that you should read, I wanted to mention a few life-changing tips to help you find the time to read those books! You are probably thinking “I'm already stressed out and overwhelmed! I have no time to read a freaking book!!” Girl, I'm with ya! I had the same thought when a good friend recommended I read The Fringe Hours. She was adamant that I read that book so I got it. I had it for a few weeks before actually getting around to reading it. Want to know how I did it? I took it to the bathroom with me one day and that is where it stayed until I finished it! OK, maybe that's a little TMI, but I'm sure you can relate – the bathroom is the only place that I'm alone (except for my crazy dog who just can't give me privacy). Normally, I would just check Facebook or emails while sitting there on the toilet. Let me tell you, that toilet-time has given me the most enlightening moments with what knowledge I've gained from the books I now read from there!
#1 Start Saying YES to You
We are people-pleasers – I get it. We commit ourselves to doing so much for everyone else and as though the world is depending on us so we can't possibly say no. Let me let you in on a little secret – the world will still go on if you decide to skip a few of these things! For reals! Let someone else pick up the slack for a change. When you begin to view YOU as a priority – you will make time for your own self-care (which can be anything from going for a run to reading a book). I say this out of sheer experience because I managed to do it myself. We make time for our favorite TV shows and trips to Starbucks for coffee. We also make time for our friends (and even those we only consider acquaintances). It is OK to say “NO” to them! Start saying “YES” to yourself more often and you'll be amazed at how easy it gets to start saying prioritizing your own needs.
#2 Take Back Your Precious Minutes
So how did I start finding more minutes for me? Honestly, it started in the bathroom! Seriously!! That's like the only “quiet” time I get to myself (except for my dogs having to watch me). Instead of grabbing my cell phone to check emails or Facebook, I took those few minutes to start reading a page or two from a book (my favorites are listed at the end of this post!). Funny enough, the first book I read was called The Fringe Hours! I then started making better use of other idle minutes throughout the day – like waiting in the drive-through, waiting to pick up my daughter after school, at the doctor's office – all times I would normally just be playing games on my phone or surfing the internet. But the more I did this, the more “minutes” I seem to find to enjoy this newfound pleasure!
Turn off the TV! Let's face it – TV is full of crap! You could spend forever flipping through the channels trying to find something that isn't loaded with drama or stuff that just isn't positive. Violence, sex, drama, cheating, immoral topics – UGH! My normal evening routine was to get the kids to bed so I could crawl into my own bed and watch a few episodes of Big Bang Theory before I went to sleep. Now, I turn EVERYTHING off for about 30 minutes before bed and simply read a few pages of a book. I made the choice to take those 30 minutes back and I love it!

#3 Look for Opportunities to Multi-Task
We, women, are the masters of multi-tasking – for everything and everyone but ourselves! Start looking for opportunities in your day where your hands are busy but not so much your mind. Technology has put just about anything and everything at our fingertips (or earbuds). When you are doing the dreaded but much-needed housework, listen to some motivational podcasts or just make it fun by cranking up the music and dance like no one is watching! Housework doesn't have to be a chore if you do it right! I take my dogs out for a run every morning and use that time to listen to either my favorite Christian podcast instead of my playlist. I also like to get my books on Audible since I don't always have time to physically read them. Plus, my eyes are getting so bad that listening is much easier than putting on my coke-bottle glasses to make out the words on the pages lol! (Try Audible's free-trial and see for yourself!)
Ok, so here are my absolute favorite life-changing books that have empowered me with some major life-saving tips for cutting the clutter and making myself a priority.
This book empowers us to find and/or take back pockets of time we already have in our day in order to practice self-care and do the things we love. She uses her own experiences and those of women across the country to teach readers how to balance their many responsibilities while still taking time to invest in themselves. She also addresses barriers to this lifestyle, such as comparison and guilt, and demonstrates how eliminating these feelings and making changes to one’s schedule will make the reader a better wife, mother, and friend. It must have been a God thing that this was the first book I chose to begin reading because it truly helped me find even more time to read the other books! Order your copy of The Fringe Hours today!
**Another way to enjoy these books is to LISTEN to them when you are doing housework, going for a morning run, or any other time that you can feed your brain while completing other manual tasks!
I think this is now my absolute favorite book ever! Crystal Stine teaches us to embrace the Holy Hustle in everything we do. Ditch the comparison game by embracing community; focus on serving instead of always striving; and redefining purpose as we seek the roles God has for us. This is definitely a life-changing book that every woman needs to read so she can find balance in her life and live healthier and happier. Get your Holy Hustle now and embrace your new life!
This is definitely a must-read for new moms or moms that are just completely spent -overwhelmed with the job of being a mom (and so many other things to so many). Motherhood is an emotional roller coaster and too often, moms feel isolated and alone in their struggles. When you realize that we are all in this together and that it is ok to ask for help (and that what you are feeling is normal), it is like a huge burden has been lifted! Check out desperate now.
I'd love to hear what other life-changing books you may have read (from the toilet or elsewhere!) that have empowered or enlightened you! How are you taking care of you? What are some things you are doing to prioritize YOU?
