Are you where you want to be in life in regards to a career? Why not? I have this conversation often with both men and women and most of the time their answer falls in line with not having a college degree or other formal education. The truth is that you do NOT need a college degree to be successful. This is another excuse many add to their (usually) long list of excuses for why their lives are a mess. Oh, spoiler alert – if you've followed my ramblings for any amount of time you know that I don't hold back or sugar coat things lol! You can learn how to be successful without a college degree and actually live the life of your dreams! But first, you must get out of that “I can't because…” mindset. NO MORE EXCUSES!!
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

NO MORE EXCUSES!
You know who I'm talking about – it might even be you. Every single thing that goes wrong in your life is “because of…” a blame placed everywhere but with your own choices and decisions. Some can even get so caught up in a past betrayal or ordeal and use that as a reason for their demise in life. I'll admit, I was that person for a season. BUT – I didn't like that person and I knew that God had put it in me to make something great of myself. I also came to the realization that every single thing in my life was a result of choices that I made or didn't make. Even that horrible ex-husband who stole money from me to support his crack addiction. Yes, that was MY fault in that I rushed into a relationship with someone I barely knew. I could have remained bitter over the ordeal – and I'm sure you know a few people who, years after the divorce are STILL bitter and haven't moved on. I made the choice to NOT be that person.
So what does my ex-husband have to do with you being successful even though you have no formal education? Everything! The whole point of that last paragraph was to highlight my CHOICE in changing my circumstance and mindset. When you stop viewing yourself as a victim (of whatever circumstance or situation) you will almost be blinded by the brightness of opportunity staring at you! You may be thinking, “dramatic much?” but in all honesty, if you are refusing to move forward in your life because of supposed self-imposed or imaginary barriers, who is really being dramatic? At the end of the day, if you are not where YOU want to be, you have no one to blame but yourself! But the best part is that it's never too late to get there! Think of it like this: if you come to a roadblock when traveling (like literally a road closure), do you just cancel your trip? Heck NO! You find a detour. So start working on a detour for getting to your intended career destination.
** While this post is directed at those without a college degree, the information can also be applied to those who have a degree and either can't get a job or maybe just want to do something different and don't know where to start.
HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT A COLLEGE DEGREE
Personally, I think college degrees are overrated unless you are planning to be a doctor or lawyer. With the advent of the internet and technology, there are many college majors that can be better learned on your own. Yes, I do have a Bachelors Degree (in Emergency Management) but I got it while still in the military so I could get extra points towards advancement and because I believed I couldn't get a job after the military without one. FOO-EY!! Get past what society has brainwashed your mind into believing and start thinking for yourself! You do NOT need a college degree to be successful and create a comfortable life for yourself. Here are some tips on how to be successful without a college degree.
Change Your Mindset
Before you can even begin to start working on a profitable future, you MUST get your head right and in the game. Stop with the negatives! Start each day with some positive affirmations and good vibes. Even if you don't feel like it, say them OUT LOUD!! The more your brain hears positive, it will literally be rewired to reject the negative. Part of changing your mindset might involved parting ways with or at least minimizing your time with the toxic and goal-less people in your life. And that includes family! Yeah, that part might suck but if you want success bad enough, you'll do whatever it takes.Change your mindset, change your life! Reprogram your brain to see the future and not the past!Click To Tweet
Start with Your Skills and/or Experience
Everyone has at least one thing they are good at. Something that everyone comes to them for. Some people have several “things.” What about your hobbies? As you look over your list, start seeing those things you are “good at” as things that be turned into a business. You may think to yourself “oh, that's just something I do” but are other people making money doing that very thing? So why go to work for someone else (making their bank account bigger) when you could translate it to making YOUR bank account bigger?
Are you addicted to social media? Like, are you on it all the time and can teach a new person how everything works in about 2 seconds? Do you play around with computers? Do you love to write? Are you a Sunday school teacher (not paid)? Are you a regular teacher (paid educator)? Are you a major “fashionista” always keeping up with the latest style trends? Do you know a lot about dogs (or other animals)? Do you sew and make your own patterns? Are you good at giving advice or speaking in front of people? I could keep going…
Any of the things I mentioned above can be turned into a profitable business if you have the passion for it! You just have to stop thinking in terms of what society has pounded into our brains that you have to go to college and “get a job” because that is absolute crap!
Outside the Box is the Best Place to Be
You have to be willing to take risks to make it and become successful. No progress comes from staying in your comfort zone. You have to think big and think in terms of “that's crazy – but I'm going to do it anyway!” Don't try replicating what someone else is already doing. Yes, use what others are doing to give you inspiration but you have to create your own dream from it. Think about the airplane. Do you know how crazy everyone thought the Wright Brothers were when they said they were going to build something so we could fly? I'm sure some thought they were mad (crazy)! But they had that “outside-the-box” thinking and look how that turned out! If it sounds crazy, it's probably the best idea you've had!If it scares you then it's probably what you should be doing! No progress will be made from a comfort zone!Click To Tweet
How Do I Get Started?
There are so many resources depending on what you want to do. First, you need to find a tribe of others with similar goals and dreams. And I'm NOT just talking about people in your town. You have to get out there and FIND them! You can start with your local Chamber of Commerce. They usually have networking mixers that you can attend. Another great one is Toast Masters. This one is really to help you with getting in front of people and speaking but it can also connect you with a larger network. My favorite and what helped launch me into my current success is Facebook.
Get on Facebook
If you really want to learn how to be successful without a college degree – GET ON FACEBOOK!! I get so irritated and annoyed when I'm talking to someone at a job fair or just having a conversation with them on trying to get their life on track and they say “oh, I'm not on Facebook – too much drama there.” I'm like “seriously?” Here's a little secret that I'm going to let you in on – if you had drama in your life because of Facebook then you simply have drama. Facebook is just your scapegoat, your excuse, for the drama and that drama will follow you regardless of whether you are on Facebook. If you are really serious about getting ahead in life and finding ways to be successful, you are seriously missing out on one of the best free resources known to man. Be selective about who you “friend” or “follow” and follow productive and empowering pages instead of the latest gossip or any other page that thrives on drama. None of that is going to help you.
The great thing about Facebook is that once you start following a page or join a group, Facebook will then recommend other similar pages and/or groups related to it. I have been connected to so many private groups for women wanting to improve their lives, groups for women entrepreneur (or entrepreneur wannabes). Fill your feed with THAT instead of what you were filling it with. Aside from providing you with a network to learn from and get ideas, it is another avenue of POSITIVE energy and support. Not sure where to start? Here are just a few groups to get you started:
- Fearless Entrepreneur Women
- Classy Career Girl Network
- Christian Women Bloggers United
- Virtual Assistant Club
- Vetpreneur Tribe – this group is for US MILITARY VETERANS ONLY and one of the best I've ever found!
Or, you can start with my new group Girl Bosses Rock Tribe. This is a brand new group that I created to help bring other Girl Bosses together for empowerment, inspiration, and support. I would LOVE for you to help me get is started!
Aside from these groups, simply type your interest into the search bar on Facebook. Whatever your idea or passion, there are at least a handful of groups out there supporting each other in that arena.
Once you've figured out what you want to do, start making it happen! There are plenty of others in the networking groups that I mentioned earlier that can help you with getting on the right path for your chosen dream. But you have to TAKE ACTION! Whatever your passion is, PURSUE IT and don't stop!
If you enjoy writing and connecting with others in that way, consider starting a blog. You may think a blog is some trendy New York thing for fashionistas (and it can be) but think of a blog simply as a website full of articles. It's seriously the same thing! (and btw – you CAN make a comfortable living by blogging because I do!). So if blogging is something that you want to know more about, I can DEFINITELY help you with learning how to do it!
Another really great option for anyone with mad admin skills is to launch your own Virtual Assistance company. If you aren't familiar with the term, a Virtual Assistant (VA) is simply an administrative assistant that provides a service or services on his/her own terms and not for a single employer. If you are great with creating spreadsheets, editing documents, scheduling, sending emails, (and more), this would be an excellent option for you! You can totally do this from your own home (in your pajamas)! This is actually a very hot job right now and women all over the planet are earning full-time income right from the comfort of their own home!
Affiliate marketing is a great way to start earning passive income. Some are doing it and earning full-time (and then some) income. You can learn more about that with this video from Click Funnels! Even if you don't quite have “the plan” for what you want to do as far as a career, getting your feet wet with affiliate marketing can be VERY profitable! Affiliate marketing is a perfect way to generate income while you are figuring out that dream career!
Did you know you can actually make money on Pinterest? Oh YES! I actually just published an E-course teaching others how to do it! You can check out the free Beginner's Guide here. Affiliate marketing with Pinterest is an easy way to earn additional passive income! By the way, Pinterest provides me with an additional steady income stream every month!
Speaking of teaching – whatever you are the expert on, write a course and sell it! Online courses (not college courses) are becoming more and more profitable because they are so much cheaper than formal schools, you don't have to go through all the hoops of college exams, and they are written by people who are actually doing it! You can checkout Teachable which is the platform for my school Girl Bosses Rock Academy. It was super easy and now I'm bringing in another additional stream of income (separate from the blog and Pinterest)!
Are you interested in graphic or web design or social media marketing? Any of these things can be learned simply by searching Pinterest. Huh? That's right! Believe it or not, I haven't taken one single “formal” course on web design, graphics, blogging, social media marketing, or any of that! I have friends going to college for four years to learn stuff that I get off Pinterest for free! Here I am killing it with two blogs plus two accounts for each social media platform, 5 networking groups that I moderate, an online teaching platform, mastering the art of affiliate marketing, email marketing, and social media marketing – WITHOUT a degree or formal education in that area! My secret? I simply made PRODUCTIVE use of my time. Instead of feeling sorry for myself when I had no job and was struggling to pay the bills, I did something about it!
So, you want to know how to be successful without a college degree? You simply get out there and make it happen! Stop making excuses and start researching. So many of us spend hours upon hours on the internet doing unproductive stuff and catching up on celebrity gossip. Use that time to work on bettering yourself and creating a better future. You can literally learn anything on the internet so make sure you are learning something that will benefit you, your family, and your bank account! The bottom line is: you don't need a college degree to be financially successful in your life!
