For many people with chronic pain, as well as those suffering from anxiety and depression, it is a life-long struggle to find the right combination of prescriptions medication to treat their conditions. Each new drug brings new side effects requiring more medication. It is a never-ending battle to find relief and have a better quality of life. I was on this road for a long time – both for mental health and chronic pain – until I tried CBD oil. This is my story.

I am not a doctor and the following is for informational use only. This is simply a testimony of MY experience with using CBD oil products.
How CBD Oil Gave Me My Life Back
I have degenerative disc disease with two herniated discs at the L4/L5 and L5/S1. My back pain had become so bad that I couldn't stand but for a few minutes without needing to bend forward or continually pull my knee up to my chest to stretch it out for a momentary relief. Going to the grocery store was something I dreaded because I couldn't even make it down one aisle without practically laying across my basket as I pushed it forward. Even worse if there was a line at the check out lane – you would find me sitting “Indian-style” on the floor waiting for the line to move!
I work from home and sit at a desk in my office typing away on my computer. That also became an issue because I could only sit for maybe 10-15 minutes without needing to get up and stretch. Eventually, I just moved my computer to the end table next to my couch and that's where I'd do my work because the couch enabled me to move my hips and sit in various positions to alleviate some of the pain.
At 45 years of age, I was a pretty active person, running with my dogs, hitting the gym, etc. Being still just wasn't part of my vocabulary! All of it came to a complete stop because I just couldn't do it! I started driving to the park down the road early in the morning to let the dogs run off-leash so they could get their daily exercise. I couldn't even take them for a walk around the neighborhood anymore because just walking made me miserable.
Bring on the drugs
I tried avoiding opiates as long as possible because I know the damage they can cause. Having served in the military and working with so many veterans over the years, I've seen firsthand how opiates can destroy lives. My own sister was introduced to them many years ago and has been battling addiction ever since. But at this point, I was so desperate for SOME relief and the doctors didn't yet want to do surgery. Within a period of 6 weeks, I was given Tramadol, Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, and Hydromorphone ER. They say it's getting harder to get opiates from doctors – yeah, I put that myth to rest pretty quickly. The sad part is that I didn't even need to ask. I simply said the one wasn't doing much and they just GAVE me a prescription for a stronger one!
I'm not a stranger to the prescription-drug train. I've struggled with mental health issues for most of adult life. During my military time, I was basically used as a science project of “let's try this and see what happens.” During the course of a year, I was prescribed no less than 10-15 different psych meds to help with my depression, anxiety, and other symptoms of PTSD. Each drug gave me a whole new set of issues – requiring a new drug to “fix” it. At one point, I was taking about six different medications each day – Ritalin to start my day (because the other ones made my sluggish), several anxiety and depression ones during the day, and ended my day with Ambien. In the end, the effects of these drugs ended my military career and I was given a medical retirement.
I've survived one suicide attempt and almost had a second one while on these “approved” medications. It took me almost 10 months after I left the military to eventually wean myself off of them and I pretty much rebelled against all doctors after that. Until the back pain. (And just a side-note – I was a single parent with two young kids during all of this time.)
I've had enough
Back to the 4 opiates in 6 weeks discussion – Even though they kept giving me stronger drugs and higher doses, they still weren't alleviating my pain. They did, however, cause major constipation – seriously, I wouldn't poop for over a week! They increased my migraines (which I've also struggled with for years and gone through the gamut of prescription drugs for treating them with no luck). They just made me feel like even more crap than I already did! I stopped taking them and just dealt with the pain. This, of course, made me more irritable around my kids and I just stayed home and did what I could without moving too much.
Enter CBD Oil
I'd heard of CBD oil for a while but really didn't know much about it. Truth be told, I didn't care to learn about it because I thought it was just another method of getting high from cannabis. The topic of legalizing marijuana is a hot one right now so everyone is bragging about the benefits of its use and how it should just be legal for everyone. I do believe that marijuana is beneficial for medical issues but (just my opinion) I don't agree with legalizing it for everyone because I grew up around people that smoked pot and well, I just don't think it should be legal for everyone to have any time they want. But then again, alcohol is legal.
One day, a woman in one of my veteran entrepreneur mastermind groups was talking about it and I decided to listen to what she had to say. She shared some literature for us to read and I came to realize that I had it all wrong as far as what I thought CBD was.
My Life Now
I decided to order a CBD sample kit from a company she recommended and give it a try. I took a dose before bed and another one the next morning. By the end of the second day, my back pain was almost non-existent! There is a vague hint that its there, but nothing like it was. None of the opiates had ever had this effect! Over the next few days, I decided to try taking it only once per day at bedtime. I noticed that I was actually sleeping through the night! Having lived onboard Navy ships, coupled with just the stresses of life, I've never been one to get a good night's sleep – ever! I'm now sleeping through the night (unless my dogs decide they have to pee at 2 am). I also noticed that those other “getting older” pains in my knees and hips that I'd pretty much just gotten so used to and forgot about – were also gone! Normally, getting up off the floor was a slow process with lots of grunting lol. I'm getting up like no big deal these days.
I'm now back in the gym a few days a week. I went for a run in the first time in over a year just a few days ago. I'm walking my dogs around the neighborhood again in the evenings. It's like the last year never happened! Yes, there are days when I do feel the pain. It isn't 100% gone. The discs are still jacked up and those herniations are still there. If I'm overly active, I feel it. I took my kids to the zoo last week and had to take a “sit” break a few times. The difference, though, is before I started using CBD oil, taking a short break only gave me a momentary break – like a few seconds – from the pain. As soon as I got back up, the pain returned at the same level. If I take a short sitting break and get back up, I'm good to go. I've learned that if I know I'm going to be overly active, I'll take a morning dose of my CBD oil and that usually takes care of me for the day.
One thing I forgot to mention about using CBD oil over opiates. I've had ZERO side effects or added ailments since using it. I'm pooping on schedule now (don't laugh because if you've used opiates you know what I'm talking about!). There is no “high” or “eurphoria” when you take it. My mental health is better than it's been in years. Overall, I just feel healthy and WELL. I am now completely free of all prescription medications with the exception of Zyrtec for my seasonal allergies. My migraines have become almost non-existent. My gut feels great.
I know there is still a lot to be done at the “law” level. Unfortunately, many at that level still don't understand the difference between CBD oil and “weed” and how you can extract beneficial compounds from the same plant that produces bad stuff – don't we put poppy seed on our muffins these days (but that same plant is used to make opium). I just want everyone to know that CBD oil does provide many health benefits. Talk to your doctor. They can't recommend it to you but if you ask, they can tell you what they do know. I hope that one day soon, doctors can actually “legally” recommend CBD oil in the same way they recommend other natural remedies like essential oils and vitamins. CBD oil is NOT a drug – it is a supplement that has so many health benefits.
**Due to the nature of the products and the ongoing legal discussion regarding cannabis-based products, many companies are unable to accept credit cards for payment. Credit card companies will either not approve them or charge extremely high fees (which would then be passed on to the customer through higher prices). Some current methods of payment include E-check and Facebook pay (both are completely legal and safe). I shop exclusively through Hemp & CBD Superstore for Summit brand products. Once you check out with them, you will be sent an email link for paying via electronic check (E-check). You will simply enter the sale amount, then enter bank routing and account number. This is the same method for setting up auto payments with your electric company and other auto-pay bills. I have been purchasing from this company for several months and have never had any issues. Hopefully, in the near future, there will be less legal stigma associated with CBD products and companies will be able to utilize the credit card processing terminals without issue.
